Sustainable solution to modernising printing equipment and tracking systems.
Carbon were selected to support a major project for Houston Bottling and Co-Pack (HBANDC), to revolutionise its print & scanning operations by replacing an outdated, inefficient equipment fleet with energy-efficient Canon Multifunctional Devices. Alongside this, Carbon implemented a secure, cloud-based visitor management solution, ensuring compliance with BRC certification requitements and replacing a legacy clocking-in system. The result was significant energy savings, a reduction in CO2 emissions, and improved operational efficiency and reduced cost.
Challenge.
HBANDC were operating with an ageing fleet of outdated print technology using multifunctional devices that were highly inefficient, consuming large amounts of energy. The business was also relying on a paper-based visitor sign-in process and was eager to strengthen compliance in its bottling facilities serving the spirits industry. Houston Bottling needed modern, fit-for-purpose, energy-efficient equipment to reduce costs, ensure compliance, and streamline operational processes across their 2 sites in Renfrew and Dumbarton.
Background.
HBANDC is an independent company established over 35 years ago offering a wide range of specialised services for the spirit industry. Ensuring the health and safety of everyone entering the premises is critical for their operations. Until now, a paper-based process was in place for visitors, contractors and drivers, which was open to errors and delays. The company required a more efficient and professional digital solution that would ensure compliance with standards like BRC (British Retail Consortium). Additionally, their fleet of printing devices was particularly energy hungry, leading to higher costs and environmental impact. As a business focused on sustainability HBANDC were happy to move forward with a fleet of eco-laser devices from Canon as part of Carbon’s sustainable managed print service.
Our Solution.
Carbon recommended and deployed a new range of energy-efficient Canon Multifunctional Devices (MFDs). This included two A3 Canon C3930i MFDs for the main administrative offices at each site supported by 9 A4 Canon i-SENSYS X devices for areas of the business with more simple requirements. These new machines were chosen for their quality, reliability and for their energy efficiency which led to a significant reduction in downtime, cost, energy usage and emissions. In addition to the hardware upgrade, Carbon implemented a secure, cloud-based digital visitor and staff management system. This modern system provides accurate, digital records of every person entering the facility. Visitors input their information via the system, and it generates a PDF record stored securely in the cloud. Post-visit, they receive a thank-you email with the details they’ve provided, offering seamless data capture and compliance.
This solution was quickly taken to the next level for staff to replace a legacy clocking in system using RFID fobs to further improve operational tracking and internal processes for health and safety and payroll.
Benefits.
£3500
projected annual savings
78.7%
reduced energy consumption, from 6002.68 kWh over five years to 1276.05 kWh
lowered CO2 emissions
from 1651 kg to 350 kg over five years—equivalent to saving 60 trees.
The cloud-based visitor management system ensures compliance with health and safety regulations, by providing real-time, accurate data on everyone entering the premises.
The digital sign-in process and clock-in/clock-out system eliminates manual errors and streamlines data collection for both visitors and staff, saving time and ensuring accurate records.
From our first meeting, we were impressed by the detailed information, potential cost savings, and energy-efficient solutions Carbon offered. Communication was outstanding throughout the project – from initial consultation to installation and ongoing support. Following the success of our printing upgrade, we also replaced our clocking-in system with Carbon’s seamless, paperless solution. The new system has improved efficiency and ease of use across both sites. We’re extremely pleased with the results and Carbon’s service.”
